Follow these four essential steps to install Jaypee Swellable Water Bar correctly at a concrete construction joint.
Step 1 — Clean the Surface
Remove dust, laitance, loose particles, oil, grease, and other contaminants from the concrete surface using a wire brush and scraper. The surface should be sound, clean, and dry before installation.
Step 2 — Position the Swellable Water Bar
Place the Swellable Water Bar continuously along the centre of the prepared construction joint. It may be installed directly on the concrete surface or in a suitable groove.
Step 3 — Fix Securely
Secure the strip with an approved adhesive and, where required, mechanical fasteners. Ensure that it remains straight, firmly bonded, and correctly positioned during the next concrete pour.
Step 4 — Confine and Activate
Pour and compact the next concrete section carefully so the strip is fully confined. When water reaches the joint, the hydrophilic strip expands to help seal potential water paths.
Installation sequence: Prepare the concrete surface, position the Swellable Water Bar, secure it with approved adhesive or fixings, and fully confine it within the next concrete pour.
For best performance, maintain the required concrete cover around the strip and protect it from premature contact with rain or standing water before concreting. Refer to the latest Jaypee installation instructions and approved project drawings before use.

Q1.Can Swellable Water Bar be used in any type of joint?
No. Hydrophilic swellable bars are typically not recommended for expansion or high‑movement joints. They are designed for construction and non‑movement joints where the concrete section provides adequate confinement, minimum cover, and limited joint movement so that swelling creates a compression seal without damaging the concrete. For joints with significant designed movement, a different joint‑waterproofing system is normally required.
Q2. When should I choose Swellable Water Bar and when might another joint‑waterproofing system be more suitable?
Swellable Water Bar is a strong choice when you need an active, water‑reactive seal in static construction joints, especially where access limits conventional embedded waterstops or where high water heads are expected. For joints with large or repeated movement, very thin concrete sections, or complex detailing, an alternative system such as an appropriate PVC or hybrid waterstop, or a different joint‑waterproofing design, may be more suitable. Swellable Water Bars are designed to expand by a controlled percentage in the presence of water—often in the range of roughly 150–300% or more, depending on the formulation. Expansion rate and ultimate volume can vary between freshwater, saline, and contaminated water, so the correct grade should be chosen for the exposure conditions. Products must be stored dry, in original packaging, and protected from premature contact with water or heavy rain to prevent pre‑expansion before concreting.
